add first draft of algorithm specifications

I write the algorithms for the 1D case for simplicity, because the ND case needs to include a bunch of extra concepts like simplices and triangulations

maybe we should just write it in actual python

I found it a bit hard to convey what we actually do because I was trying to write the algorithm as a sequential set of instructions, whereas in reality we have the ask and tell interface which allows what actually happens to be switched up somewhat
